Lyrics meaning

The lyrics describe a person drawn into war against his wishes, then left to face its consequences. At first, the focus is on a long history of violence and hatred; later, it becomes personal: a draft letter disrupts his dreams, and he is sent to fight. The repeated question, โ€œWho will you be fighting for?โ€ shifts attention from the battlefield to what life and purpose might mean afterward.

The โ€œlonely fortressโ€ suggests that even when the fighting ends outside, a person may remain isolated and struggle internally. The fire dwindling to โ€œdying embersโ€ is an image of a conflict fading, but not disappearing all at once. Calling the soldier โ€œjust another numberโ€ implies that military systems may treat individuals as replaceable, while promises of โ€œhope and gloryโ€ seem misleading beside the grim reality of being taught to kill.

The song can be read as a criticism of war and the forces that send people into it, while also showing sympathy for the person caught up in it. The refrain does not give a clear answer about what the survivor should fight for next. That uncertainty may be important: the end of combat does not necessarily bring relief, belonging, or a clear new purpose.
