Lyrics meaning

The lyrics portray a young soldier facing death in a battle far from home. At first, the speaker seems to be a dying man whose last wish is that people remember what happened. The focus then shifts into the soldierโ€™s experience: waiting in a trench, fearing the attack, and watching friends die. The repeated contrast between โ€œhomeโ€ and war expresses a longing for safety, but the hope of returning home is answered by the grim possibility of dying.

Several images make the danger vivid. The trench is described as filled with blood and mud, turning it into a place where soldiers wait for death rather than shelter. Rain becomes a comparison for falling blood, suggesting that violence covers the whole battlefield. The โ€œno manโ€™s landโ€ between opposing sides implies a space claimed by neither, where soldiers are exposed to deadly fire. Calling the battlefield a โ€œbloody tombโ€ makes clear that it is also a grave.

The song presents both sides as human beings caught in shared suffering: โ€œfriend and foeโ€ may meet again after death. Its condemnation of cruelty does not remove individual responsibility; the line that every person โ€œplays a partโ€ suggests people contribute to violence, even within a larger system of war. The closing image of spirits crossing the lines may be spiritual, poetic, or simply a way to imagine reconciliation beyond life. The lyrics leave that meaning open while insisting that the dead should be remembered.
