Cape Of Our Hero

The lyrics describe someone searching for strength, guidance, and a sense of purpose. They begin with the idea that change is necessary, then turn toward a hoped-for escape from feeling low. The repeated promise of flying again suggests resilience: although the speaker is brought down, they keep imagining recovery and help.

Several images express this struggle. “The old skin has to shed” compares personal change to an animal growing beyond its former covering. The “cape” suggests the power or courage of a hero, while lying on the ground and staring upward contrasts present helplessness with dreams of rising. The stars’ glow lingering after the stars are gone suggests that something can leave effects or memories behind even after it has disappeared.

The angels may represent comfort, rescue, or faith in support beyond oneself, but the lyrics do not specify exactly what they are. Likewise, the speaker’s nightly talk with the “fathers and the heroes” could be a search for role models, protection, or inherited wisdom. The song can be heard as hopeful, though not simply triumphant: its repeated need to fly again implies that setbacks continue, and that belief itself may be part of how the speaker endures them.
