Hey, Gert, it's dad
Calling to wish you a happy birthday
Hope you're having a great time out in California
Just calling to check on you
Love you
Bye
Had a dream the 27 Club was waiting on me
Couldn't bear another birthday cake just short of my dreams
So I wrote a farewell letter to my friends and family
Waited for the rain and wrapped my car around a tree
The funeral was beautiful but I was surprised
Even the girls I knew from high school all had tears in their eyes
My brothers and my sisters held each other for dear life
My mother, oh my god, I couldn't even stand the sight
I woke up and I heard a voice that said
Here's a list of what you'd miss if you were dead
The stars in the sky, the tear in his eye
When you're standing at the altar
The phone calls from your father
The nights you hardly survived
But you made it to the morning
That's gotta count for something
The truth is no one makes it out alive
But I'm gonna try
Smoke is finally clearing and I'm looking around
Joey's got a nice girlfriend and Joel's moving out
We've been trading weekend benders for nights in on the couch
We're all getting older and it's better somehow
And I met someone who's good to me
I'm learning to be good to me
I think we're gonna make it
Oh, to think that I would trade it for
The stars in the sky, the tear in his eye
When I'm standing at the altar
The phone calls from my father
The nights I hardly survived
But I made it to the morning
That's gotta count for something
The truth is no one makes it out alive
But I'm gonna try
I'm gonna try
I'm gonna try to find the silver lining
Believe in perfect timing
Not everything I think about myself is true
So I think I'll keep
The stars in the sky, the tear in his eye
When we're standing at the altar
The phone calls from my father
The nights we hardly survived
But we made it to the morning
That's gotta count for something
The truth is no one makes it out alive
But I'm gonna try
