I was kind of a weird kid
The kind who writes in sharpie on her arms
And my hair in front of my face
Was hiding the eyeliner I was so bad at applying
And I would miss a period
To go out and practice with my band
We never settled on a name
We never wrote a song
But we'd put on our favorite records, and play along
And if you know what you want then
Don't let anyone tell you you can't
Cause they only tell you to follow your dreams
When they line up with the ones they have for you
And this is all I've ever wanted
Stage left guitar and an amp
And I knew the only way to get it
Was to never have a back up plan
So I dropped out of college
It was never for me anyway
I'm still chasing the same dumb dream I was chasing when I was fifteen
I wanna be an emo heart lover
I wanna play a show every night
Cause I still believe that teenage angst is enough to build a life
And I'll never be a mother, I'll never be a wife
But I still believe that this Grrrl Angst is enough to build a life
Well I grew up in the suburbs
It doesn't matter where they're all the same
MCR, The Used, and Taking Back Sunday,
Were the soundtrack to my boredom and pain
I fell in love every day
And got my heart broken by the end of the week
And all those years I hated myself
I wouldn't trade them for anything
You can talk shit if you want to
But let me tell you what I know of that scene
It was the only place that this queer kid could ever find a community
The first time I wore makeup
I was twelve or thirteen
And the first time that I put on black
Skinny jeans there was no going back for me
And then I started playing music
And suddenly everything changed
I started chasing the same dumb dream I'm chasing now at twenty-three
I wanna be an emo heart lover
I wanna play a show every night
Cause I still believe that teenage angst is enough to build a life
And I'll never be a mother, I'll never be a wife
But I still believe that this Grrrl Angst is enough to build a life
I never (I never)
Had a backup plan (Had a backup plan)
I never (I never)
Had a backup plan (Had a backup plan)
I never (I never)
Had a back up plan (Had a backup plan)
This is all I've ever wanted and this is who I am
