Lyrics meaning

The speaker says he has a bad name in his village even though, in his view, he harms nobody. He simply chooses to live differently from the respectable majority. Each verse adds an example, and the repeated complaint about people disliking those who take another path makes the song sound both playful and critical. The mood grows darker near the end, when the speaker imagines the villagers wanting to hang him.

Several images make the criticism vivid. Staying in bed instead of joining a marching celebration suggests indifference to public displays of patriotism or obedience. When the speaker trips a farmer chasing a thief, he humorously sides with the thief; “letting the apple thieves run” means he refuses to help punish a petty offender. The phrase “another road” is both a literal path and a metaphor for an unconventional way of life. “The roads that don’t lead to Rome” likewise suggests choosing a direction outside the familiar, approved route.

The song’s jokes are deliberately sharp: the speaker’s claims that he does no harm sit beside his mischievous actions, so he is not presented as simply innocent. His conduct may be a protest against conformity, but it also has a comic, troublesome side. The imagined execution could be exaggerated for humor, while still hinting at how harshly a community may treat someone who refuses to fit in.
