Lyrics meaning
The lyrics move from a vivid picture of two worlds meeting to a more personal note of loss. At first, the newcomer arrives with ships and weapons, while the people he encounters seem to live in an organized, prosperous society. The song then imagines their destruction and ends with the speaker thinking about a woman he loves but cannot quite remember how he lost. The final repetition of โCortezโ turns the arrival into an accusation.
โDancing across the waterโ makes the arrival sound almost graceful, but the galleons and guns reveal its violent purpose. The comparison of people to โleaves around a treeโ suggests a community connected to its ruler and to one another. Their stone-building is presented as an achievement so great that people โstill canโt do todayโ; this may express awe, but it also highlights how much was lost. โI lost my wayโ can mean emotional confusion as well as a separation from the woman.
The picture of a peaceful society is striking, yet it may be idealized: the lyrics also mention sacrifice, and the speakerโs claims are poetic rather than a balanced historical account. The womanโs connection to the earlier world is unclear; she could be part of the speakerโs personal memory, or a symbol of something irretrievably lost. The song leaves that connection open, joining private grief to a broader sense of violence and disappearance.
