Drink the Water

The lyrics describe someone feeling trapped in an unpleasant, disorienting experience and wanting to escape it. At first, the speaker rejects what they have been given and longs for air and relief. Time seems stuck, and a bad day becomes a frightening drift toward being “out of time.” The mood then shifts from personal confusion to a portrait of someone weighed down by rigid thoughts, before returning to the hope of reaching safety.

Water carries much of the meaning. The “salty substitute” may suggest something offered as nourishment or comfort that instead feels wrong and hard to accept. Swimming ashore suggests finding solid ground after being adrift; “if I drift long enough, I’ll be home” sounds hopeful, though it also implies giving up control and trusting the current. The image of “stones instead of bones” suggests a person who is so heavy or inflexible that moving forward is difficult.

The song leaves open whether the speaker and the “he” in the second verse are the same person, or whether the verse describes someone else. The repeated warning to hold on adds urgency: drifting may feel like a path home, but sinking can happen faster than expected. So the ending offers hope without making escape seem easy or certain.
