I'm a songwriter pushing 60
No, you've never heard me on the radio
But I'm leaving my songs behind for you
When it's my time to go
So if you can be persuaded to listen
I'm singing this one to declare
In the land of music streaming
If you look, you'll find 'em there
Some go all the way back to my teens
Through the decades, they survived
Recorded them in my 50s
When I finally had the time
Spent hours at the computer
With a modest assortment of gear
Now they're floating around in the ether
For anybody to hear
So won't you play my songs when I'm gone
Help a little part of me live on
And if you want to make my day
Go ahead sing along
Set out to be Dylan or Springsteen
When I first started to write
Couldn't play an instrument
But I could hear my songs inside
So I focused on writing the lyrics
To the tunes playing in my head
The words sometimes came easy
Other times they
A college roommate with a guitar
Taught me a handful of chords
If I sang slow enough
I could play along with my words
Open chords and a capo
Have sure taken me a long, long way
And when I add some fancy backing tracks
They sound pretty darn good, I'd say
So won't you play my songs when I'm gone
Help that part of me live on
And if you really want to make my day
Come on and sing along
Fortune and fame escaped me
So much for earthly celebrity
But when the final curtain closes
You can grant me immortality
If you just play my songs when I'm gone
You'll help that part of me live on
And if you can forgive this shameless plea
I'd love to hear you sing along
Some are folk, and some are country
Some are blues, some are rock and roll
Since I never had a record deal
Nobody put me in a pigeon hole
So there's a good chance you can find one
That just might suit your taste
And if I'm still this side of the daisies
Please don't feel like you have to wait
To play my songs until I'm gone
You can help me keep hanging on
As long as I'm alive and kicking
We can have a little sing-a-long
But don't forget to play my songs when I'm gone
I promise they aren't all this long
And I'll be up there listening
Hoping that you sing along
