Small Axe

The song speaks to someone powerful who acts unjustly and boasts about being clever. The speaker contrasts that person’s wrongdoing and vanity with enduring goodness and moral strength. The repeated promise to cut the powerful figure down gives the song a determined, defiant mood: those with less power are not helpless.

The “big tree” and “small axe” are the central images. The tree suggests a large, established force, while the axe represents a smaller group that can still challenge it through persistence and unity. The saying about someone who digs a pit falling into it means that people who plot harm may eventually suffer the consequences of their own actions. “No weak heart shall prosper” suggests that courage and resolve are necessary to stand against wrongdoing.

The lyrics can be heard as a call for resistance, but they do not specify exactly who the “big tree” or “small axe” represents. The threat to “cut you down” may suggest direct confrontation, or it may be a figurative promise that injustice will lose its power. The references to a Master and Jah also give the speaker’s confidence a spiritual dimension, presenting goodness as something lasting even when its opponents seem stronger.
