Makin' Believe

The song describes loving someone who cannot be with the speaker. She knows the relationship is not hers to have, yet she keeps imagining that the person still loves her. The feeling moves between sadness and hope: she recognizes the truth, but dreams offer a way to endure it.

“Makin’ believe” means pretending something is true, or imagining it so strongly that it brings comfort.
