Lyrics meaning

The speaker describes love as intense and essential, presenting the beloved as both a source of pleasure and something the speaker cannot live without. The repeated plea, “Don’t ever leave me,” grows more striking as the lyrics suggest that without this person, the speaker would be reduced to nothing. The mood is devoted and passionate, but also dependent and vulnerable.

Several images make that dependence vivid. Calling the beloved a “high dose in the veins” compares love to a powerful substance that enters the body and may be hard to do without. The line about a wall, asphalt, and the speaker lying even lower suggests a downward collapse: after the beloved, there is only a barrier, then the ground, then the speaker beneath it. Calling the beloved both “the illness and the nurse” captures a contradiction: this person may cause suffering, yet is also imagined as the one who can care for or relieve it.

The lyrics can be heard as an exaggerated declaration of devotion rather than a literal account of helplessness. Still, images of following like a lapdog and being nobody without the beloved make the relationship sound unequal or emotionally consuming. The song leaves room for both readings: romantic intensity, and a warning about love becoming dependence.
