Be True To Your School

The lyrics celebrate strong loyalty to one’s school. The speaker responds proudly when someone boasts about another school, then shows that pride through clothing, a car sticker, and support for a football game. The mood is energetic and confident, with school spirit presented almost like a personal identity.

“Let your colors fly” suggests showing your school loyalty openly, perhaps by wearing its colors or cheering for its team. The letterman’s sweater and decal are visible signs of belonging, while “number one in the state” sounds like a boast rather than a carefully proven fact. Comparing loyalty to a school with loyalty to a romantic partner makes the feeling sound personal and devoted.

The song can be heard as a playful celebration of teenage community and competition. Its talk of being ready to fight and “smash” the other team may be exaggerated sports bravado, not necessarily a literal wish for violence. The lyrics do not explore whether the speaker’s school is truly the best; they focus on the pleasure of backing one’s own side.
