Lyrics meaning

The song contrasts a bird’s apparently simple, free life with a person’s anxious view of the world. The speaker first admires the bird, which can keep rising, but then describes fear of war, time, loneliness, and noise. He also doubts that love can improve humanity. By the end, frustration has joined his fear: he still cannot decide how to respond, and the refrain returns as an image of escape or hope.

The bird lives on “pure air and fresh water,” suggesting a life with few needs. Its ability to go “higher” can mean freedom from the troubles weighing on the speaker, though it may also be an idealized picture of nature. “Merchants of freedom” is a critical expression for people who sell or promise freedom but may be taking advantage of others. Looking at his own face in the mirror, the speaker hears himself lamenting; “show my teeth” suggests fighting back, while “lower my arms” means giving up.

The repeated refrain does not resolve the speaker’s questions. It may offer a modest comfort: the bird keeps moving upward without needing to explain how. But the song does not say that human beings can simply become like birds, or that love and freedom are entirely false. The speaker’s repeated “I’m lost” leaves his outlook uncertain, caught between wanting to resist and feeling unable to choose.
