Lyrics

Down in Stokes County, North Carolina When I was about, I was five or six years old There was a fella, Charlie Lawson Who for some reason or other went all I don't know what happened to the man They never have figured it out but He killed every one of his family except One boy that had gone to the store and then Shot his wife and murdered them all with a I think it was a .22 rifle except one or two of 'em He ran out of shells for that one and Used a shotgun and then he killed himself And there was a group called The Carolina Buddies that That wrote a song about it It tells the story almost as in detail as same as if You'd read it in the newspaper column, The Sun They titled it "The Lawson Family Murder" I'm havin' troubles here I'll try to sort'er, I wanna get it in tune this time 'Twas on one Christmas Evening The snow lay on the ground Near his home in North Carolina In this murder, he was found His name was Charlie Lawson And he had a loving wife But we'll never know what caused him To take his family's life And when this sad, sad news was heard It was a great surprise He killed six children and his wife And then he closed their eyes Said, now farewell, kind friends at home I'll see you all no more Into my breast, I'll fire one shot Then my troubles will be o'er They did not carry him to jail No lawyers did he pay But they'll have his trial in that other world On the final Judgment Day They all were buried in a crowded grave While the angels watched from above Come home, come home my little ones To a land of peace and love I know some of you boys that like to Play guitar with a flat pick out there have Been waitin' for me to pick it to you I better get a little different pick to do this with too Jus' have one of them limber jobs So won't mess up too many of them hard notes There's some fiddle tunes every once in a while I like to play on the guitar One of 'ems called "The Beaumont Rag" Now, boys, this here'uns a hard'un, I don't know I'm gonna try it anyway
