How Great Thou Art

The lyrics express awe and gratitude toward God. The speaker first looks at the vastness of creation, then imagines Christ’s return and being taken home. This imagined reunion brings joy, while the speaker’s response is humble praise. The repeated refrain makes that praise feel like a strong, heartfelt conclusion.

The stars and rolling thunder are images of the natural world, presented as signs of divine power. “Take me home” suggests more than returning to a physical house: in this religious context, it can mean being welcomed into life with God. To “bow with humble adoration” means to show reverence and wonder, not simply to bend down.

The song combines two feelings that might seem different: the speaker feels small before something greater, yet also joyful and comforted by the thought of being received. “How great” is both a statement of belief and an emotional exclamation. The lyrics present this future reunion with confidence, though listeners may understand “home” and the promised return literally, spiritually, or as a source of hope.
