Lyrics meaning
The song begins with a narrator meeting Lucille in a bar after she has taken off her wedding ring. She says she is done living on dreams and wants laughter and a different life. The mood shifts when her husband arrives, looking devastated and speaking of the children and farm she is leaving behind. Though Lucille leaves with the narrator, his sympathy for the husbandโs pain overwhelms his attraction.
The โringโ suggests the end of a marriage, while the โfour hungry children and a crop in the fieldโ make the consequences of leaving feel concrete and urgent. The husbandโs large, rough appearance is compared to a mountain, but his shaking body and breaking heart reveal vulnerability beneath that strength. The repeated line about choosing a fine time to leave is bitter irony: he means that her departure comes at a moment when the family seems to need her most.
The song does not give us Lucilleโs full account of the marriage, so we cannot know whether leaving is selfish, necessary, or both. The narrator initially sees her as beautiful and imagines beginning something with her, but he becomes unable to separate her from the pain he has witnessed. His hesitation may reflect compassion for the husband and children, discomfort with becoming part of a painful situation, or both.
