The song portrays a young man who seems lonely and emotionally disconnected, even though he has material comfort and opportunities. When the couples leave, he wants company but also recognizes that others have relationships and homes of their own. The repeated description of him as a “poor little rich boy” sounds both sympathetic and teasing: he may be privileged, yet still unhappy. The mood shifts between gentle pity and sharp criticism, especially as the song returns to his inability to love the people close to him.

Several images suggest distance. Water running off his skin and into a drain may imply that the world’s troubles do not truly touch him, or that experiences simply pass over him without changing him. His girlfriend’s worry about her weight is mentioned, yet the singer makes clear that his lack of love is not caused by her appearance.

The repeated insistence that he is very young can sound like an explanation for his confusion and emotional immaturity. It may also be an excuse he—or the voice addressing him—uses to soften blame.
