Dance Away

The lyrics describe someone facing the pain of a lost romance. At first, the speaker remembers a hopeful evening when they called the relationship love. Seeing the former partner with someone else turns that memory into heartbreak. The mood then shifts from shock and loneliness toward an effort to keep going: the speaker dances through the night, trying to make the grief and fear less powerful.

“Dressed to kill” usually means dressed very attractively; here, it is followed by “guess who’s dying,” a darkly playful way to show how painful the sight is. The crowded room in which everyone feels alone suggests that being surrounded by people does not guarantee closeness. Dancing becomes a way to “dance away” tears and heartache—not necessarily to erase them, but to distract from them or release some of their force.

The song’s ending sounds more accepting than its opening: the speaker recognizes that the former partner is out of reach and that they must keep moving until a new possibility appears. Still, the repeated refrain leaves some uncertainty. Dancing may be helping the speaker heal, or it may be a temporary escape from feelings they have not fully faced.
