Lyrics meaning
The song tells of a father whose young son is grieving his dead mother. At first, the father sees the kite as just a birthday gift, but the boy reveals that he wants to use it to send his mother a letter. The feeling shifts from a parent’s gentle confusion to sadness as the child expresses how much he misses her and struggles with the change in family life.
The kite becomes an imagined messenger between the boy and his mother, who is described as being “high in heaven.” Sending the letter upward gives the child a way to speak to someone he can no longer reach. The phrase about not getting used to “the other woman” suggests that his father has a new partner, but the boy still longs for his mother and may feel that this new relationship cannot replace her.
The song can be understood as a tender picture of childhood grief: the boy’s belief that his letter might reach heaven is both hopeful and heartbreaking. The lyrics do not explain the father’s feelings about his new partner, or how the boy’s relationship with her may develop. The kite may therefore represent not only hope, but also the distance between the boy’s private sadness and what his father has understood.
