Lyrics meaning

The song presents an old fisherman facing the end of his life with calmness and humor. He asks his shipmates to think of his death not as a final separation, but as a voyage to a place called Fiddlerโ€™s Green. The imagined destination becomes more joyful and carefree as the song describes it.

Fiddlerโ€™s Green is pictured as a sailorโ€™s paradise: clear skies, playful dolphins, plentiful fish, and no hard work or bad weather. The repeated image of being wrapped in oilskin, practical clothing for life at sea, makes his departure feel like setting out on one more ordinary trip. His request to tell his โ€œold shipmatesโ€ he is โ€œtaking a tripโ€ softens the idea of death through a familiar seafaring expression.

The paradise is comic as well as comforting: pubs, free beer, and rum growing on trees make it sound like a wishful fantasy shaped by a sailorโ€™s pleasures. The fisherman also rejects a harp and halo, traditional signs of a heavenly afterlife, in favor of a breeze, a rolling sea, and his squeezebox. Fiddlerโ€™s Green may suggest an afterlife, but the lyrics leave room for it to be understood as the old manโ€™s imaginative, personal way of meeting death.
