Rift

The speaker describes a dreamlike inner struggle. At first, thoughts seem to drift toward a dark divide; then reason appears to leave, and the speaker faces a force called “destiny.” After that force falls, silence takes over. The repeated refrain suggests that the speaker feels stronger or more resolved, though the ending returns again and again to the intense passion that began the crisis.

The “rift” suggests a division or hidden depth in the speaker’s mind, especially since the light above cannot reach its darkness. “Wings of reason” make clear thinking seem like a person or bird that can fly away, leaving the speaker without its guidance. The ledge and the fall turn an abstract conflict with destiny into a dangerous physical scene; “slipped off the edge” may suggest defeat, loss of control, or escape from a limiting fate.

The lyrics do not explain what sparked the passion or what happened on the “terrible night,” so the conflict remains open to interpretation. It could be an emotional turning point, a struggle with desire, or a dramatic dream rather than a literal event. “So much better” sounds reassuring, but the repeated mention of silence and shock leaves room for doubt: the speaker may have gained resolve, yet the experience still feels unsettling.
