Wanted

The speaker sounds hurt and confused after a relationship has gone wrong. They believe that misunderstandings and unclear wishes have kept the two people apart. At first, they describe feeling overwhelmed; later, they explain that they wanted to stay close, but recognize that separation may be better if they are treated badly. The repeated admission, “I didn’t understand,” gives the song a tone of regret as well as frustration.

“Head between my hands” is a familiar image of distress or worry: the speaker seems weighed down by the situation. “By your side” means being close and supportive, not simply standing next to someone. The idea of trying “another way” suggests an effort to communicate or solve the problem differently. By contrast, “better off apart” means that ending the relationship might bring less pain than continuing it.

The speaker’s account is only one side of the conflict, so the other person’s wishes and reasons remain unclear. The refrain could express genuine confusion, but it may also carry a hint of accusation: the speaker wonders whether this painful outcome was what the other person wanted. The lyrics do not settle whether the separation is final or whether clearer understanding might still change things.
