The Crowd

The speaker goes out and joins other people, but social activity no longer feels enjoyable. He remembers dancing and having fun with someone who is now gone. He ends by imagining that they might return, though the hope sounds uncertain.

“The crowd” means more than a group of people. It represents ordinary social life, which feels incomplete because the speaker’s loved one is missing. Their “hideaway” suggests a private place where the two could escape the noise and attention of others. Saying he will “make believe” that the person will return shows that he is trying to comfort himself with a hopeful fantasy, not describing something he knows will happen.
