Lyrics meaning
The song describes a dying young man pleading not to be buried on the open prairie. His request is ignored, and he is placed in a small grave there. The mood moves from sorrowful pleading to a bleak sense of abandonment: he is left in the very place he feared, without anyone nearby to care for him.
The โlone prairieโ suggests isolation as well as a physical landscape. Coyotes howling and wind blowing freely make the setting feel exposed and unsettling, while โnot a soul that will care for meโ expresses the young manโs fear of being forgotten. The narrow grave, โsix by three,โ gives death a stark, concrete image and contrasts with the wide-open land around it.
The lyrics do not explain why the others disregard his final wish, so their failure to listen may seem callous, or simply tragic and unavoidable. The repeated plea keeps the focus on his fear rather than offering comfort or explanation. The prairie could be understood literally as a lonely burial place, but it also evokes the broader human fear of dying unseen and being left alone.
