Any Dream Will Do

The lyrics move from curiosity and hope to loneliness, then end in uncertainty. At first, the speaker closes his eyes and imagines a bright, new world. Dawn seems to bring the world to life, but the cheerful dream suddenly collapses. The speaker is left alone and longs to return to the beginning, while both he and the world remain hesitant.

The “golden lining” and “bright colours” suggest hope, excitement, or a feeling that life could be wonderful. The coat may represent the speaker’s dreamlike identity or confidence. In contrast, the colours fading into darkness show that this happiness does not last. “A crash of drums, a flash of lights” evokes a sudden, dramatic change, as if the dream has ended abruptly.

“Any dream will do” can sound hopeful: the speaker is willing to accept whatever future or vision offers comfort. But after the dream fades, the repeated phrase may also suggest uncertainty or even resignation—perhaps any dream is acceptable because the speaker does not know what comes next.
