Nashville Cats

The song celebrates Nashville musicians and their lively country sound. The speaker remembers discovering records as a young teenager and being thrilled by music that seemed fresh and exciting. The mood is playful and admiring, with the repeated chorus turning praise for the musicians into a catchy refrain.

Several images make the praise vivid. Playing “clean as country water” suggests a clear, pure sound, while “wild as mountain dew” suggests energy and spirit. The claim that guitarists can pick more notes than ants on an anthill is humorous exaggeration, emphasizing how skilled and numerous they seem. Saying the music “blasted me sky-high” means it made a powerful impression and lifted the speaker’s excitement.

The song’s numbers and claims about musicians starting work before age two are likely comic exaggerations, not facts to take literally. The speaker also jokes that even an ordinary guitar case might contain someone who plays better than he does. His admiration seems sincere, but the humor keeps the song light. The lyrics suggest a place where music is deeply encouraged, while leaving open whether Nashville itself or the speaker’s youthful enthusiasm is being idealized.
