Faces

The lyrics encourage listeners to notice the people around them and recognize that they experience different kinds of life. The mood moves from observation—seeing happiness and suffering in many faces—to a direct appeal for empathy, peace, and an open mind. Later, the tone becomes more urgent, warning against behavior that harms people or the world.

“Faces” stands for individual people and their varied experiences: a face may reveal joy or pain, but the lyrics also remind us that everyone is different. The contrast between people who are poor and those who “wear a crown” points to inequality and differences in social position. “Open your mind” is an idiom meaning to be willing to consider others’ perspectives, while “the other fellow man” means another person, whoever they are.

The song’s message is broadly inclusive, asking people to sympathize across differences, including race and circumstance. Its warning about “playing with your life” and “killing of the colours” is less specific: it may refer to reckless choices, conflict, or destructive attitudes, but the lyrics do not explain exactly what is meant. Rather than offering a detailed solution, the song emphasizes awareness, understanding, and care for others.
