Any Way You Want Me

The speaker promises to become whatever their beloved wants: strong or weak, calm or wild, foolish or wise. The repeated line, “Anyway you want me,” gives the song a devoted, pleading tone. The feelings seem loving and eager, but the speaker also appears willing to give up much of their independence to keep the relationship.

Several comparisons show how completely the speaker is prepared to change. A “mountain” suggests strength, while a “willow tree” suggests softness or weakness. The contrast between a tame baby and a raging sea similarly presents opposite sides of a personality. The image of a heart made of clay suggests something soft that another person can shape into a chosen form. Saying the beloved “holds the key” implies that they have the power to decide what the speaker becomes or what happens to the relationship.

This can be heard as a romantic promise of flexibility and deep commitment: the speaker wants to meet their beloved’s wishes. But it can also sound unequal, because the beloved seems to have nearly all the power, while the speaker defines themselves through that person’s choices. The lyrics do not tell us whether this surrender is joyful, anxious, or a little of both, so that tension remains open.
