Lyrics meaning

The speaker repeatedly asks forgiveness for the harm people cause: making someone cry, leaving someone while laughing, and forgetting places or people. The feeling grows from regret about particular relationships into a broader unease about indifference and neglect. By the end, the speaker seems especially troubled by not knowing who has the right to forgive them.

Several images make the regret concrete. A tear changes a face, suggesting that emotional pain leaves a visible mark. Words of love are compared to money used as payment: affection and promises may be spoken cheaply, without being honored. The contrast between โ€œneverโ€ and โ€œalwaysโ€ points to absolute promises that fail, while the forgotten villages and lonely cities suggest that neglect can affect whole communities, not just individuals.

The repeated request for pardon may sound sincere, but it also carries uncertainty. The speaker admits to being among those who โ€œdonโ€™t care about anythingโ€ and to not having tried every day, so the apology includes a confession of passivity. Yet the final question complicates it: forgiveness is sought without knowing who has been hurt or who should grant it. The lyrics can therefore be read as personal remorse, a wider criticism of human indifference, or both.
