Lyrics meaning

The song addresses a respectable, faithful wife and gently asks whether she ever imagines a life beyond her safe routine. Its emotional tone is teasing rather than accusatory: the speaker recognizes her public virtue but wonders about private longing, especially during lonely or melancholy evenings. By the end, such thoughts are presented as ordinary and human, not as a reason for shame.

Several images connect her to Penelope, the wife of Ulysses in Greek myth, who waits for his return while weaving. Here, however, her Ulysses is an ordinary suburban husband, which makes the grand myth feel humorously domestic. The “other bed” and “new stars” suggest imagined sexual adventure without describing it directly. Cupid appears as an “angel” and a “demon” whose arrows awaken desire; the image of a statue regaining a woman’s flesh suggests that passion can revive someone who seems emotionally still.

The speaker’s reassurance that the sky will not blame her frames these fantasies as a “venial” sin—a minor fault, if a fault at all. The song does not clearly say that she will act on them, or that she is unhappy in her marriage. “Penelope’s price” may mean the hidden cost of being the endlessly faithful, patient wife: desire and curiosity do not disappear simply because someone behaves respectably.
