Jezebel

The lyrics portray Jezebel as a woman who begins with little but is determined to rise. Her beauty draws attention, yet the song also stresses her effort, pride, and ambition. The emotional tone is admiring, while hinting that her drive may come from hardship: she describes each winter as a war and insists she deserves what she can gain.

Several images suggest struggle and hope. “Less than every one of us” presents her as starting at a disadvantage, while “reach for the top” makes success sound like a climb. The sun shining after winter implies relief or reward after difficult times. Her “raven” eyes may suggest intensity, mystery, or a strong character, but the image is not explained, so its meaning remains open.

The song can be heard as celebrating self-reliance: Jezebel knows where she came from and refuses to be ashamed of it. At the same time, her refusal to listen when others offer “a better way” suggests that her determination could become stubbornness, or that she distrusts advice from people who do not understand her experience. The lyrics do not tell us whether she succeeds, or what she has had to do to get ahead. They leave her ambition both inspiring and somewhat unsettling.
