Lyrics meaning

The speaker repeatedly says he is not superstitious, yet he treats several everyday events as signs of what may happen. This contradiction gives the song a playful, uneasy tone: he denies belief in omens while describing them as if they matter. The mood grows darker when the signs are linked to trouble and death, though the repeated lines keep the delivery from feeling like a straightforward warning.

The black cat crossing his path is a familiar image of bad luck. Being swept with a broom is also presented as something that could bring trouble, jokingly expressed as “getting put in jail.” An itchy right hand is taken as a sign that he will receive or encounter someone; a twitching left eye suggests that somebody “has to go.” These sayings sound like folk beliefs, but the lyrics do not explain exactly how the signs are supposed to work.

The song may be teasing the speaker’s own denial: he claims not to believe in superstition, but he watches for omens and worries about their meaning. His statements can also be heard as exaggerated blues humor rather than sincere fear. The dogs’ howling is the clearest dark image, called a sign of death, but even here it is unclear whether the speaker truly believes it or is heightening the song’s comic, ominous mood.
