Lyrics meaning

The speaker is grieving a relationship changed by past choices. He believes he could have given his partner what they needed, but time cannot be undone. He knows they must move on, yet his love makes that painful. The song shifts between accepting this difficult truth and insisting that he will keep holding on.

โ€œTurn back the yearsโ€ means undo the past, not literally reverse time. The image of looking out the window and turning off the light suggests retreating into loneliness or trying to escape painful thoughts. Calling the other person โ€œthe water I drinkโ€ and โ€œthe air that I breatheโ€ expresses how essential they feel to him.

There is a tension between โ€œwe have to move onโ€ and โ€œIโ€™m never gonna give it up.โ€ This may mean he cannot stop loving the person even if the relationship must change, or that he is refusing to let the relationship end. The lyrics do not fully resolve this conflict. His repeated declarations can sound devoted, but alongside the need to face the truth, they may also suggest that letting go is something he understands he should do but cannot yet manage.
