Lyrics meaning

The speaker wakes in terror from a dream in which a flood has trapped them and their companion underwater. At first, the scene feels like a threat to both their lives. In the darkness, however, the speaker listens to the other person breathe, and fear shifts toward tenderness and awareness. The repeated thought that they have only one breath between them suggests a newly felt closeness: the speaker had not fully recognized how connected they were.

The flooded house and the miles of water above them make danger feel immense and enclosing. Whales beating their tails overhead add a strange, vivid sense of life continuing in the world above, while the trapped pair struggle for air below. “Oxygen” is both a basic need and a measure of how limited their shared situation feels. The speaker’s attempt to learn not to breathe is an imagined sacrifice: they want to give the other person a little more time, though that person is asleep and unaware.

The underwater scene may be a nightmare rather than a literal event, so it can also be read as an image of emotional pressure or fear of losing someone. The shared breath may express intimacy, dependence, or the speaker’s sudden realization of how precious ordinary closeness is. The lyrics do not explain what caused the fear, or whether the companion feels the same connection; their sleeping silence leaves that uncertain.
