Now Smackwater Jack, he bought a shotgun
'Cause he was in the mood for a little confrontation
He just let it all hang loose
He didn't think about the noose
He couldn't take no more abuse
So he shot down the congregation
You can't talk to a man
With a shotgun in his hand
ย
And now Big Jim the chief stood for law and order
Hey you are Big Jim
He called for the guard to come and surround the border
And from his bulldog mouth
As he led the posse south
Came the cry, we got to ride to clean up the streets for our wives and our daughters
Oh no, no
You can't talk to a man
When he don't want to understand
ย
The account of the capture wasn't in the papers, oh, no
But you know, they hanged ole Smack right then instead of later
You know the people were quite pleased
Because the outlaw had been seized
And on the whole, it was a very good year, yeah
For the undertaker
You know, you know, you can't talk to a man
With a shotgun in his hand
I said, a shotgun in his hand
Smackwater Jack
He bought a shotgun
He bought a shotgun
He bought a shotgun
Shotgun, yes he did
Talkin' about Smack
Talkin' about Jack
Talkin' about Smack and his shotgun
Talkin' about Smack
Talkin' about Jack
Talkin' about Smack and his shotgun
Talkin' about Smack
Talkin' about Jack
Talkin' about Smack and his shotgun
Talkin' about Smack
Talkin' about Jack
Smackwater Jack, yeah
ย
Smokin'

This is the thing that I, I wrote in 1967
And it's the song that got me a record deal with Apple Records
I played it for, for Peter Asher who is right up there
So my big break, is a huge moment for me
So somebody had opened the door, and the rest of my life were on
On the other side of it, which happens often actually
But, but usually in a negative way
But it's adore, and it's hell on the other side huh
Anyway this is a, a song that got me signed
