She came with a fiddle slung over her back
Mud on her boots and the sky turning black
No coat, no horse, no name on her tongue
"just clear me a chair and pour me some rum"
The wind was a beast, the door slammed twice
Someone whispered, "this don't feel right"
But she rose in the bow with a matchstick spark
And said: "this is the tune that tears apart dark"
She didn't blink, didn't speak
Just played as thunder cracked the peaks
She played when the storm came down!
Lit up the sky and shook the ground
Lightning curled round every string
Like her fiddle was the only real thing
She played when the storm came down!
Didn't flinch, didn't turn around
If death had come, he'd have sat and stared
'Cause no one plays like she did
The bottles shook, the rafters moaned
Old songs died to make this one known
She played like a river breaking free
With fire in her fingers and no melody
Some say the roof never leaped again
Some say she was never quite human then
Others swear they saw her grin
When the devil himself tried to wander in
Her bow was bone, her strings were fake
She played like the storm couldn't wait
She played when the storm came down!
Lit up the sky and shook the ground
Lightning curled round every string
Like her fiddle was the only real thing
She played when the storm came down!
Didn't flinch, didn't turn around
If death had come, he'd have poured her a glass
'Cause no one else would have lasted that fast
Some say she's gone, some say she plays
On stormy nights in far off bays
But the tavern swears by roof and beams
She made the wind forget to scream
She played when the storm came down!
Lit up the sky and shook the town
Tables cracked and voices fell
But her song rang like a copper bell
She played when the storm came down!
And left behind no name, no crown
Just strings still humming when morning came
And the storm forgot what it came to claim
