That Particular Time

The lyrics describe a relationship at a moment of serious doubt. At first, the speaker is frightened and wants to escape, but love gives them a reason to stay and wait. A break is supposed to help both people understand what they want. As time passes, however, the speaker recognizes that trying to preserve the relationship has come at a personal cost. The emotional movement is from fear, to patience, to the painful decision to leave.

“Rocked” in “my foundation was rocked” suggests that the speaker’s sense of security has been shaken. Their old way of coping is to “vanish”—to withdraw rather than face a difficult situation. The image of needing “time to marinate” means allowing feelings and ideas to develop before making a decision. Later, “fly solo” suggests that the other person needs independence, while “deserting me” means that staying would mean abandoning the speaker’s own needs.

The ending does not present leaving as easy or as proof that love has disappeared. The speaker says the separation was very hard, yet staying would have meant losing themselves. There is also regret: they admit to ignoring the other person’s uncertainty and apologize for losing their sense of self. The lyrics leave open whether the separation is permanent, but suggest that, at this particular time, leaving is necessary for both people to understand what they want.
