Lyrics meaning

The speaker tries to persuade Ariel that staying in the sea is better than longing for the human world. The mood is cheerful and confident, with lively descriptions of underwater life. Yet the speakerโ€™s argument also sounds like a sales pitch: he presents sea life as carefree while warning that life on land is hard and dangerous.

โ€œSeaweed is always greener in somebody elseโ€™s lakeโ€ echoes the idea that other peopleโ€™s lives can seem better from a distance. The song uses this image to suggest Ariel may be idealizing the world she has not experienced. The contrast between people who โ€œwork all dayโ€ and sea creatures who spend their time โ€œfloatinโ€™โ€ makes the ocean seem relaxed. The fish-in-a-bowl image adds a darker joke: a fish may escape its bowl only to become someoneโ€™s meal.

The song celebrates belonging, music, and enjoyment of the present, especially through its parade of fish playing instruments. But its claims are exaggerated for comic effect: the sea is portrayed as trouble-free, while the human world is made to seem uniformly unpleasant. The speaker may sincerely value his home, but he also has a reason to discourage Ariel from leaving. The lyrics leave room to see his cheerful song as both affection and persuasion.
