Lyrics meaning
The lyrics follow a woman who works on the street and finds comfort in listening to an accordion player at a dance hall. She is deeply moved by his music, and imagines a future together. When he leaves as a soldier, her hope gradually gives way to loneliness and despair. In the final scene, she goes back to hear music, dances at last, then cries out for it to stop.
The “java” is a lively dance tune, but for her it is more than entertainment: it brings the musician close in memory and stirs powerful feelings. The phrase “it gets under her skin” means the music affects her intensely, almost physically. Her dream of a home where she runs the till and he is the boss suggests a modest but happy shared life; the contrast with her present work makes that dream feel especially precious.
The lyrics never explain exactly what happened to the musician. Her belief that he will not return could mean he has died, or simply that she has lost hope. Likewise, dancing at the end may be an attempt to escape grief, a moment of surrender to the music, or both. Her final shout makes the music seem at once irresistible and painful.
