The Hanging Tree

The song follows a man who arrives looking for gold while still attached to a painful memory of love. Although he finds wealth and a woman who loves him, he cannot return her feelings because he believes he has left his heart behind. The “hanging tree” first represents the man’s old heartbreak: he imagines hanging his dreams there, as if putting them away for good. Later, being taken to the tree brings him close to death, but this becomes a turning point. The saying “to really live you must almost die” suggests that a brush with death can make someone recognize what matters. By the end, the same tree is called a tree of life, hope, and love.
