Lyrics meaning

The lyrics seem to trace a close friendship between two girls as it changes over time. At first, the speaker remembers a deep bond and the belief that they could solve anything together. Later, one friend appears to be lost or changed, and the speaker is left with grief, frustration, and love. The repeated refrain, โ€œCanโ€™t stop whatโ€™s coming,โ€ gives the song a feeling of helplessness: change is approaching, whether the speaker accepts it or not.

Several images suggest closeness and separation. โ€œBlanket friendsโ€ may evoke the comfort and privacy of childhood friendship, while โ€œshe seems to be sand under his shoesโ€ suggests that the friend is being worn down, overlooked, or treated as insignificant. The speaker once tells her, โ€œyou have your ownโ€ voice, an image of independence and self-expression. Later, the friendโ€™s face and eyes remain, but the speaker feels that the person inside is no longer the same.

The lyrics do not explain exactly what has happened between the friends, or who โ€œheโ€ is, so the cause of their distance remains uncertain. The โ€œbells,โ€ โ€œsoldiers,โ€ and โ€œdollsโ€ may recall different parts of their shared past, but their meaning is open. The ending holds two feelings at once: the speaker cannot stop what is happening, yet cannot stop loving the person she remembers.
