Lyrics
In a quiet little village not too many miles away
There dwelt a rich and aged man, his hair was thin and grey
He had three sons, his only sons, both Jack and Tom were sly
But Ted was honest as could be and he would not tell a lie
They did their best to ruin Ted before their father's eyes
Their poison soon began to work and Ted was much despised
One day the old man said "Begone, you're heartless to the core"
These were the words the black sheep
Spoke as he stood outside the door
Don't be angry with me dad, don't turn me from your door
I know that I've been foolish but I won't be any more
Just give to me another chance, put me to the test
You'll find that the black sheep loves his dad better than the rest
The years went by so swiftly, the father, he grew old
He called his sons to him one day and gave them all his gold
"Now all I want is a little love and a place here by your side"
One night on Jack's returning, he brought home with him a bride
The wife began to hate the old man more and more each day
Until one day the three declared "The old fool's in the way"
They made their plans to take the old man to a poorhouse near
Then like a flash the black sheep's words came ringing in his ear
Don't be angry with me dad, don't turn me from your door
I know that I was foolish but I won't be any more
Just give to me another chance, put me to the test
You'll find that the black sheep loves his dad better than the rest
A wagon pulled up in the yard, it was the poorhouse van
The boys, they pointed to their dad and cried "There is your man!"
Just then a manly form appeared and pushed right through the crowd
"Stop that you brute!" the stranger
Cried, "That shall not be allowed!"
"You've taken the old man's property and all that he could save
I'm glad our mother cannot know for she is in her grave
I am his son but not your kin from now 'til judgement day"
The old man clasped the black sheep's
Hand, the crowd then heard him say
Don't be angry with me son, I've turned you from my door
I know that I was foolish but I won't be any more
I should have given you another chance for you have stood the test
And I know the black sheep loves his dad far better than the rest
