Wrote A Song For Everyone

The speaker wants to make a song that reaches people and tells the truth, but feels unable to communicate directly with someone. The lyrics move from personal strain and arrest to concern about war, social conflict, and people living under oppression. Repeating that the song is for “everyone” suggests music becomes a way to speak when ordinary conversation fails.

Several images connect private hardship with public problems. Being “strung out” and “hung out on the line” suggests exhaustion and vulnerability, while going “down to war” points to the threat of violence. The image of people held “in chains” conveys long-lasting oppression. “Pharaohs” may represent powerful leaders who distort information, as their message spins “round and round” rather than revealing the truth.

The song’s title sounds generous and hopeful, but the repeated admission that the speaker could not talk to “you” adds frustration and loneliness. “You” might mean one particular person, or it may stand for listeners the speaker cannot reach. Likewise, writing a song is presented as an attempt to help or unite people, but the lyrics do not claim that music can solve the problems they describe.
