Lyrics meaning

The speaker is sent on a dangerous mission in the jungle, but the assignment becomes a personal test. At first, he seems eager for action; as he waits and grows weaker, the threat feels closer. He is ordered to kill a rogue colonel, and after doing so he is left alone, troubled by what he has become. The emotional movement is from anticipation to confusion, then to grim understanding and moral unease.

โ€œHeart of darknessโ€ suggests both a frightening place and a dark state of mind. The jungle seems to โ€œcallโ€ the speaker onward, making it feel as if the setting is pulling him into danger. The phrase โ€œsoul begins to bendโ€ implies that facing violence can weaken or change someoneโ€™s moral character. Calling the colonelโ€™s methods โ€œunsoundโ€ understates the danger, while โ€œexterminate with extreme prejudiceโ€ is a cold, official-sounding way to order a killing.

The lyrics leave room to question whether the colonel is simply a villain or a reflection of what the speaker may become. The speakerโ€™s image of himself holding a knife suggests he understands the missionโ€™s brutality from the inside, not just as an observer. โ€œThe genius must dieโ€ is also ambiguous: it may refer to the colonel, or express the speakerโ€™s bleak sense that exceptional people are destroyed by violence. The song presents no clean victoryโ€”only the cost of crossing a moral boundary.
