Those Were The Days

The lyrics imagine a distant, almost mythical age when the world seemed free, beautiful, and full of miracles. The repeated “Those were the days” expresses nostalgia, but the mood is not simply happy: the song also emphasizes that this wonderful era has vanished. Its emotional movement is from wonder at an ideal past toward a sense of loss.

Images such as Atlantis “serene above the sea,” flying golden cymbals, and an eagle fanning a flame create a dreamlike world where ordinary rules do not apply. The phrase “disguised as heaven” suggests that something frightening or harmful may have appeared beautiful at first. “Miracles everywhere—where are they now?” turns the song’s bright images into a question about what has been lost.

The lyrics do not explain exactly what caused the change, or whether this past is meant to be a real history, a myth, or an imagined ideal. The Medusa reference hints at danger and destruction, but its meaning remains open. “Those were their ways” may refer to the people’s customs as well as their time. The song can therefore be heard as longing for a lost world, while quietly recognizing that memories of the past may mix beauty with warning.
