Love Me or Leave Me

The speaker faces a choice: be loved wholeheartedly or be left alone. Although loneliness hurts, she says she would rather endure it than settle for someone else. Several images give shape to that conflict. The idea of “borrowing” love, then having to give it back tomorrow, portrays temporary affection as unsatisfying: she wants a lasting commitment, not attention that might disappear.

The speaker’s declaration that she loves only this person sounds absolute, yet it may also show how narrowly she sees her choices while longing for them. “Love me or leave me” can be heard as a boundary—she will not accept half-hearted affection—or as an emotional appeal meant to force a decision.
