Castles Made of Sand

The lyrics present three painful stories of broken love, lost dreams, and disability. Each person faces a moment when life seems cruel or hopeless. The repeated image of sandcastles falling into the sea links these experiences: even what someone builds or deeply hopes for may not last. The mood is sad, but the final story leaves room for a sudden change in feeling.

“Castles made of sand” suggests hopes or plans that are fragile, like structures easily washed away. The first man’s tears “burn” on the garden green, an intense image that makes his private grief seem to mark the world around him. In the second story, “many moons passed” simply means that a long time goes by, while the boy’s dream of becoming a warrior grows stronger—making its sudden end especially tragic.

The last story is more ambiguous. The girl sees a remarkable ship and briefly reacts with wonder, but it does not stop or rescue her. This could suggest that beauty can appear even in despair, without solving the pain that caused it. The refrain implies that loss and change are part of life, though it does not say that every hope is meaningless or that suffering has a clear purpose.
