Lyrics meaning

The speaker moves through the compass points, repeatedly asking where to go, but never seems to find a place to settle. Another figure arrives carrying a flag and declares the land to be his. The repeated claim, โ€œYou are here in my land,โ€ makes the speakerโ€™s journey feel increasingly unwelcome. By the end, words about being driven out and having nowhere to stay give the song a stronger sense of exclusion and loss.

The compass directions suggest movement in every direction, yet movement brings no security. โ€œFrom country to country aloneโ€ makes the speakerโ€™s isolation explicit, while โ€œnothing and nobody invites me to stayโ€ suggests rejection rather than a freely chosen journey. The flag is an important image: it can represent belonging and national pride, but here it also marks a boundary and asserts ownership. โ€œMy wave and my beachโ€ may evoke a personal connection to a home or landscape.

The lyrics leave open who the speaker is and what kind of โ€œlandโ€ is meant. The repeated voice claiming the country could be heard as a person defending home, or as a more general expression of exclusionary nationalism. The changing words in parenthesesโ€”โ€œexpelled,โ€ โ€œexpel,โ€ and โ€œforgottenโ€โ€”also complicate the ending: the speaker may be describing being forced out, the act of forcing others out, or both. The songโ€™s tension comes from this contrast between wanting a place to belong and hearing that it belongs to someone else.
