Africa

The lyrics combine longing for a loved one with a journey through an imagined African landscape. The speaker seems torn between going toward someone who is waiting and confronting something troubling within himself. The repeated promise that it will take a lot to separate him from her expresses strong devotion, while the song’s return to rain and Africa gives the ending a feeling of wonder and renewal.

Several images make the journey feel dreamlike. “Moonlit wings” describes an arriving plane as if it were a bird, linking travel with the stars that guide the speaker toward “salvation.” The wild dogs’ cries suggest loneliness and a desire for company, echoing the speaker’s emotional state. The mountain rising “like Olympus” is a comparison that makes Kilimanjaro seem almost mythical and emphasizes the certainty of what the speaker feels he must do.

The lyrics do not explain exactly what the speaker needs to cure or what he is frightened he has become. That may be personal guilt, confusion, or a broader sense of being lost; the words leave room for different readings. Likewise, “bless the rains” can sound like gratitude for nature, for life, or for a hoped-for fresh start. The song’s images create atmosphere more than a precise story.
